驯非“驯” 悍非“悍”—浅析《驯悍记》琴瑟和鸣的婚姻爱情观

At first glance, The Taming of the Shrew does not seem much more than a story of a shrew being tamed by her husband. However, character analyses of the shrew Katherina and her husband Petruchio throw a new light on the theme. Petruchio is not as materialistic as he says, and his taming is, actually, an act of courting. All women are born with a certain element of femininity and masculinity; the difference between a lady and a shrew is the one on the degree of her femininity. Katherina is not simply shrewish out of a desire to be shrewish; her shrewishness is just an unwise outlet of her spirited nature. When she realizes the courting and love of her husband behind his taming, her masculine intelligence gradually gives way to her feminine tenderness, thus bringing a happy marriage to them both. This paper concludes that a happy marriage is actually a bargain between husband and wife, both of whom may desire the upper hand in the marriage. However, only those who can balance dominance and submission between the two parties can boast of an ideal marriage.
