William Faulkner's short novel That Evening Sun exquisitely depicts a post-civil-war American black woman Nancy's horror over her husband Jesus' attempt to kill her for her pregnancy with a white man. This paper studies Nancy's motivation to compromise with the whites and Jesus' impotency in his constant non-presence. And it comes to the conclusion that Nancy figure symbolizes the collective loss of identity and split personality of the American blacks, while Jesus' non-presence and deferred murder symbolizes the spiritual wasteland of the modem world
