明代,伴随着倭寇入侵广东,广东的城防建设也在发生着重大的变革。上位城市城防建设进一步完善,中位城市的城防建设在嘉靖后期大都经历了一个从无到有的过程,而且受倭患的影响,粤东地区中位城市的城防建设进步最大;代表下位城市的卫城和所城肩负着重要的军事职责,其城防建设一般比较完善。
