From 1820 to 1860, a large scale of Catholic immigrants poured into the United States. They enhanced the power of American Catholic church and broken the balance of power between Catholics and Protestants. The arrival of these Catholic immigrants brought about the fact that American Catholic showed some the characteristics of immigrants. It raised fears and strong rejection from Protestants fears. Dominated by Protestants, the members of Know-Nothing Party launched violent offensive to the Catholics, putting the conflict to peak.
