Tie-dyeing is one of famous and traditional dyeing technologies from ancient China,which is renowned with time-honored history and exquisite craftsmanship.There is a plenty of significant infor-mation in ancient documents and archaeological materials,including the designations,key points of tech-nique,dermatoglyphic patterns and social functions ,Therefore,it is of necessity to conduct meticulous classification and interpretation of tie-dyeing through textual research of visual documents about ancient scroll paintings,grotto murals,kinds of tri-colored glazed pottery of the Tang Dynasty and pottery figu-rines.By reflecting on and analyzing the commonality between tie-dyeing and these ancient materials, we are trying to discuss the characteristics and profound culture connotation of the ancient tie -dyeing technology.
