Xie Ling-yun was greatly influenced by Confucian concepts, which could be easily found in most of his literary ideas and works. Born in a family of power and influence, he had the personality possessed by some typical traditional Chinese literati and his poetry boasted many literary quotations and allegories. Moreover, his Confucian concepts concerning temperament and landscape had a close relationship with the unique aesthetic conception in his poetry. He is so adept in Confucian allegories that Confucian flavor permeates his poetry in his choice of literary allegories and the landscape images.
