This article aims to discuss the extent to which the test designers of a general English test（named Practice Test 2, Compact First of Cambridge English）, with a focus on its speaking component, have succeeded in producing a valid, reliable test that reflects the language use that the testees are likely to be involved in, with respect to some key issues in testing such as validity, reliability, backwash and authenticity, as well as to draw in some good points in teaching from the design.
