On the Identity of SIMA Xiang-ru as an Essayist

由于汉武帝对司马相如辞赋的赏识,使其由一个落魄的卖酒郎而一跃成为皇帝的宠臣。在当时引起极大的反响,刮起一股司马相如赋传播的旋风。从而形成了强烈的司马相如效应:时人或向其求取赋作、讨问作赋之法、模拟仿习、作赋或托其名;后人或褒贬其赋作、以其赋作为模范等。并都以文章家来定位他,皇帝以文章家蓄之身边,史家以文章家为其立传,使得司马相如成为"文章祖",也使得文章成为一门独立之学。司马相如效应使后人对其"为文章倡始"给与认可,文章便由此慢慢独立成长起来。

Due to the fact that his lyrics were appreciated by Emperor Hanwudi, SIMA Xiang-ru became the Emperor~ s favorite minister from a wine sailor. This caused a great stir and SIMA^s lyrical style became a fashion at the time. This at last led to the SIMA effects. The people tried to ask him for his works, for the advice to compose lyrics, imitated his work style, or wrote such works in his name. Moreover, the later generations made some comments on his works which had become their models. They positioned him, the emperor got him and historians made biography for him as an essayist, which brought about him as the father of essays which gradually became an independent study. Such effects have led to the identity of his works as the beginning of essays which hence have evolved and developed.
