Some Thoughts on Punctuation Marks: A Discussion on the Chinese National Standard “General Rules for Punctuation”

文章分析了2011年颁布的国家标准《标点符号用法》中关于顿号、连接号、省略号、括号、引号的用法规定和标点符号占位宽度的规定,认为有些规则不尽合理:或易导致语句歧义;或弹性过大,等于没有规则;或规定过于死板,以致在某些情况下无法执行;或与该国标本身、其他国标存在矛盾。根据语言实践和出版工作的实际情况,文章对相应规则的修订提出了建议。

This paper analyzes the rules on the use of the slight pause mark,hyphen,suspension point,brackets,and quotation marks and on the width a punctuation mark should occupy. It argues that some of these rules are not reasonable,either causing semantic ambiguity,or being over-flexible or over-rigid,or contradicting with the national standard itself or with other national standards. It offers some suggestions on revising the rules based on language reality and actual publication practices.
