Trends in the nonwovens industry

During the last 70 years nonwovens production increased from 350 000 tons in 1940 to 2.2 million tons in 1995, and to over 6.0 million tons in 2011, of which 1.9 million tons were in Europe. By 2020/2025, global nonwovens production will lie at approx. 10 million tons. A growth rate of 7% -9% worldwide and 3% - 5% for Europe/North America is predicted. The per capita consumption of nonwovens in 2010/2011 was about 1.0 kg/year globally and 2.9 kg/year in Europe. The nonwovens industry had great potential for development in countries with a per capita consumption of less than 0.2 kg/year. As far as use of nonwo- vens in the area of hygiene is concerned, rates of increase are dependent on the development of the middle class. This is especially true for Asia and South America.
