现代性叙事是中国现代思想史研究中的支配性话语,在此话语影响下,人们惯于用诸如传统—现代、保守—进步、启蒙—救亡之类机械教条的二元论架构来研究复杂的思想和人物,遮蔽甚至抹杀了思想和人物本身的复杂性、多样性和丰富性。严复研究就是一个典型例子,无论认为严复思想分为进步与保守两个截然相反的时期,还是认为他的思想一以贯之,许多研究都没有能令人信服地处理他留下来的大量思想文本,都没能把握他思想的真正特点。

Dominated by the narrative of modernity,our research of modern Chinese thought is used to explain modern Chinese thinkers and their thoughts with the framework of dichotomy such as tradition-modernity,conservationprogress,and enlightenment-national salvation.In this way,people fail to grasp the complexity,diversity and richness of modern Chinese thought.The study of Yan Fu is a case of this approach to the research of modern Chinese thought.
