In Zuckerman Unbound, the special relationships between different protagonists are impregnated with unique cultural metaphors, therefore deserving scholarly attention and discussion. The relationships between Zuckerman the protagonist and Alvin the mysterious are the most peculiar and delicate. The present article attempts to interpret the corresponding relationship between these two Jewish characters and holds that Alvin is the cultural shadow and reflection of Zuckerman.Alvin alludes to Zuckerman's Jewish ego, symbolizing and representing his inner puzzles and pains. In other words,Zuckerman the fictionalist presents a ventriloquist's game by virtue of Alvin. The cross-referent and allusive relationships between them are none other than Roth's painstaking artistic creation and unique way of literary expression. Therefore the whole text is no less than a ventriloquist game and a metaphoric representation of Self.
