The conclusion that Coca-Cola has profound and positive influence on the economy of China was made by economists from Peking University, Tsinghua University and South Carolina University after their joint research and survey. Coca-Cola in ChinaProvides more than 414,000 job opportunities;Pays taxes of RMB1.6 billion yuan annually as taxes to central or local taxation departments;Leads to an annual output increase of RMB 3 billion yuan for the economy of China through the effect of multiplier. The indirect influence of Coca-Cola on the economy of China is much more than its direct influence. Coca-Cola created a huge network of separate suppliers and salesmen in China. The network almost covers all provinces of China. The partners of Coca-Cola in China are generally state-owned enterprises (SOEs). During the process of joint production with these SOEs, Coca-Cola reinforces the reform of SOEs with its brand new marketing and managing strategies and latest technologies of production. This pioneering research is the first attempt to meusure the local connection of a huge enterprise group in the economy of China lnternationally acknowledged research method were used in the sunvey The result of the survey shows that Coca-Cola has enormous influence on the employment, taxation and economic output of China. The result is very significant and timely since China is ready to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) and is devoted to opening up and introduction of foreign funds. The research indicates that 414000 job vacancies of 1998 in China have direct or indirect connection with the production and sales of Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola directly employs 14000 Chinese workers. The separate suppliers of Coca-Cola employ 350000; the separate salesmen (for wholesale or retailing) employ 50000. The ratio of total employment related to Coca-Coia to the direct employment of Coca-Cola is 30 to 1.The research also shows that Coca-Cola has made great contribution to the total economic output of China. It directly invested RMB8 billion yuan to the economy of China and indirectly created an added value of RMB 22 billion yuan. It is also discovered that Coca-Cola made no less contribution to the taxation of China. In 1998, Coca-Cola directly paid almost RMB 0.4 billion yuan as taxes. The operation of Coca-Cola indirectly brought about taxes of RMB 1.2 billion yuan, which were paid by Coca-Cola suppliers and salesmen. It is found in the survey that Coca-Cola facilitated the transformation of inefficient SOEs into efficient and successful joint ventures through its production network across the country. Advanced expertise of management and marketing was introduced, greatly improving the production technology of the enterprises. The operation of Coca-Cola in China boosts the production of other local departments, such as glass, plastic, aluminum and sugar. The production of Coca-Cola has brought about much more new business to the locality. Moreover, the survey shows that the operation of Coca-Cola in China has settled the problem of employment for those in need of jobs. A questionnaire by Tsinghua University indicates that 28% employees of 400 retailing shops and restaurants were jobless before the operation of Coca-Cola.The research is based on the survey and interviews made in 1999. Researchers from South Carolina University, Peking University and Tsinghua University accomplished the research with the help of Coca-Cola and its producers in China.
