Along with arbitrariness, Saussure observed the communicative function of language suggests that language is relatively motivated, viz, cognition impacts language; universally accepted weak Sapir-Whorf hypothesis implies that language indeed may have an effect on our memory, perception, and thought, viz, language influences cognition. Based upon the above two guiding worldviews, contemporary studies of linguistic sign from cognitive perspective try to answer this question "To what degree and/ or how much is language actually motivated conceptually?". Besides, via the "switchboard" function of cognition, the interaction between language and other human systems is studied. The cognitive view of linguistic sign clarifies the semiotic nature of construction, and introduces the two cognitive bases of grammatical metaphor and grammatical metonymy to solve the conflict between syntax and semantics. Finally in the paper, the interaction between language and cognition is postulated, which needs future corpus- based theoretical justification.
