The “Hall of Mirrors” Metaphor of Consciousness and Its Reductionism

在神经生理科学中,意识问题研究的关键之一是要确立大脑中与意识相关的神经组织。意识的"有镜厅"隐喻从寻找与意识形成相关的神经组织出发,以功能模块为基础,推导出意识是大脑的功能模块组成的嵌套式结构体所产生的一种副现象。在论证上,意识的"有镜厅"隐喻在意识的本体论上、桥接原则上存在矛盾,同时还缺少对情境的分析。"有镜厅"虽然有助于揭示功能模块的捆绑机制,但并不是一个关于意识的恰当隐喻。

In the science of neurobiology, the most important question of consciousness study is to establish what the neural correlates that relate to are in the brain. The goal of the ＂hall of mirrors＂ metaphor is dedicated to solve this problem. Based on functional modules, the ＂hall of mirrors＂ metaphor suggests consciousness is an epiphenomenon of multiple mosaics of cortical functional modules.ln the ＂hall of mirrors＂ metaphor, their arguments have contradictions about ontology of consciousness, the bridge principle and lack an analysis of situatedness. The ＂hall of mirrors＂ metaphor is useful for explaining binding mechanisms of funcitional modules, but is not an appropriate metaphor of consciousness.
