The British Library, as the National Library of the UK, is an executive non - departmental public body sponsored by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. The British Library Act 1972 places the British Library under the control and management of the British Library Board. The Chairman and members of the board are all appointed by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, with the exception of one member who is appointed by Her Majesty the Queen. Members are normally appointed for a term of four years, and appoint- ments are restricted to two terms. Members conform to the Code of Practice for Members of the British Library Board. The board merits six times a year, and the Library Directors are normally present during board meetings. The board has constituted an Advisory Committee with responsibility for providing advice, and delegated certain responsibilities to a number of other committees. There are some official ways for the Parliament and the Govern- ment to oversee all aspects of the Library＇ s operation and governance, such as special legislation, appointment of members of board, grant - in - aid, audit and freedom of information.
