This article investigated the related factors that influence truth-telling among advanced cancer patients and their family members, the impact of cancer disclosure on the advanced cancer patients and the needs of patients and their relatives. A questionnaire survey which was inclusive of general information, emotional state and needs was conducted on 50 advanced cancer patients and 50 family members. Most of the patients who understand their illness condition were positive and optimistic for life, and a small number of them in passive states. However most of the patients who were blind to their diseases suffered from emotional disorder because of suspicion on their own condition. Besides, the needs of patients were distinct due to their own difference of situation. Furthermore, age, education background, and religion had impact on the patient's needs of being informed of their illness condition to different extent. Truth-telling played an important role in hospice service, and was beneficial to the improvement of patients' quality of life. But certain skills were still needed during the procedure and individual characteristics should also be considered.
