摘要空间和时间同为叙事的基本维度。作为叙事艺术的大师,福克纳在小说创作中对时间和空间均给予了高度重视。但是,与时间相比,空间的诗学功能在福克纳研究中尚嫌不足。空间是当今叙事学研究的一个新热点。在福克纳的短篇小说《献给爱米丽的玫瑰》中,空间作为环境背景,不仅渲染了气氛,还揭示了人物的性格和身份;而作为一种能动的叙事力量,空间也成为人物之间社会关系或身份的建构者,是情节组织的基本维度。 Both spatiality and temporality constitute the primary dimensions of narratives.William Faulkner, a great master of fictional art, pays great attention to each of them in his works.Compared with temporality, however, the poetic functions of space are far less explored in Faulkner studies.In fact, spatial issues have become a heated topic in the contemporary study on narrative theories.In the paper, the function of characterization and the narrative progression in Faulkner＇s short story A Rose for Emily are to be studied from the perspective of space poetics.
