文廷式词学主张与其政治倾向、学术思想一致,呈现出鲜明的近代意识。他以"写其胸臆"为填词指导思想,在词史观上,推崇北宋词,力挺辛派词,肯定了清代词家对词境的开拓;在词人修养论上,主张养胸中之性情,突出政治情怀,彰显近代知识分子的主体精神及人格内涵;在词的接受上,主张读者"心通比兴",在近代学人的会通古今中西的学术视野下务求心得,关注词家的情志旨归。文廷式词论与其个性、治学精神、近代中国社会变革走向等密切相关,也是中国传统词学向现代词学发展中的重要环节。

Wen Tingshi＇s ideas of Ci poetry were in accordance with his political tendency and academic thoughts, which was a striking modern consciousness. His guideline for Ci poetry was to express one＇s thoughts. As for his view of Ci poetry history, he admired poetry in the Northern Song dynasty and advocated Xin School, which confirmed poets＂ exploration in artistic conception. As to cultivation of Ci writers, he proposed cultivation of character, political feelings, especially modern intellectuals＇ spirit and＂ personality connotation. For acceptance of Ci poetry, he thought that readers should ＂understand poets＂ ideas＂, get some insights in the perspective of ancient and modern academic field, and pay attention to poets＂ emotions and thoughts. Wen Tingshi＇s view of Ci poetry was closely associated with his personality, his spirit in studies, and the reform trend in modern Chinese society. It was also a key, link in the development of Chinese traditional Ci poetry to modern Ci poetry.
