Jude the Obscure, as Hardy’s last and controversial novel, successfully creates a new Victorian woman-Sue. Shereads plenty of books, gets new views of world and is influenced by some thinkers’and philosophers’thoughts like John Mill’sthoughts, thus having new female consciousness. The Liberty is produced under the background of British bourgeoisie obtainingthe rule and then ardent pursuit of profit. Hardy is deeply influenced by Mill’s liberty, putting these influences into his novels’characters like Sue. Through analysis of Mill’s liberal thoughts, this article makes us understand the female image of Sue moredeeply.
