OBJECTIVE: To provide recommendations for improving the selection methods of essential medicine in China. METHODS: The literature research methods and mathematical models were adopted. The selection models and methods of essential medicine of WHO, China and some other countries was evaluated and sorted; the problems were pointed out about the program, models and methods of essential medicine selection. RESULTS: The commonly used methods of selection including expert deci- sion-making, evidence-based evaluation method, pharmacoeconomic evalution method, etc. Essential medicine selection in China mainly exist some problems, such as selection methods is single, indicators are not unclear, etc. CONCLUSIONS: It is recom- mended to reconstruct a five-dimensional evaluation system, to adopt the five grades according to the strength of evidence, and to optimize the selection of essential medicines by introducing the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model.
