Formation and Evolution of Huizhou Culture

地理环境赋与了徽州人一种刚性气质。文化融合是铸就徽州文化的核心因素。徽州文化并非中原文化单纯的传承,而是具有新的特色。徽州文化既体现了中原文化的儒雅风范,又渗透着山越文化的刚强气质。宋代以后经济文化重心南移和商品经济的发展,为徽州的崛起提供了前所未有的机遇。徽州文化的发展与繁荣,充分地利用了徽州本土以外即大徽州的广阔舞台。富有特色的徽州文化在徽商崛起的过程中起了重要作用,而徽商在经济上的成功反过来又在各方面影响着徽州的文化发展。徽州文化既具地域特色,又有典型性与普遍性的特点。

The natives of Huizhou are blessed with a strong disposition thanks to its geographic environment, instead of only imparting and inheriting Central Plains culture, Huizhou culture acquired new qualities through the integration of erudition typical of Central Plains culture and strong disposition characteristic of Shanyue culture. After the Song Dynasty,the develop- ment of commodity economy,the southward movement of the economic and cultural centers and the various supports coming from beyond Huizhou proper put together made possible the rising and flourishing of Huizhou. Huizhou culture of strong char- acteristics did play a significant role in the reviving and rising of Huizhou Merchants and Huizhou Merchants in turn exerted tremendous influences to the development of Huizhou culture, in a word, Huizhou culture boasts both native features and typi- cal and universal characteristics.
