在不同时期西方社会学家都对"他者"有所关注,"他者"这一概念随社会学理论发展和现代性的深入而发生着变迁,"他者"这一概念的变迁同社会学家的理论中心紧密相关。论述了在社会理论发展之始,"他者"是以时空上与西方现代社会完全异他性的形象出现,在第二阶段则被诠释为现代社会的非主流群体,核心在于其与理性和话语权上异于主流群体,到了后现代理论时期,对现代性的反思和对主体社会的解构,使得"他者"具有多场所、多时空性,不具有确定意旨。

Western sociologists always focus on ＂the other＂in different periods , and the concept of ＂the other＂is constantly changing with the development of sociological theory and deepening of modernity , and the change of＂the other＂is closely related with the theory of social scientists .At the start of the theory of social development ,＂the other＂is completely different from the western modern society in the space and time;In the second stage ,＂the other＂is to be interpreted as the mainstream of modern society , the primary problem is that it is different from the mainstream groups in the rationality and discourse;In postmodern theory ,＂the other＂has the features of many places and much space-time, no clear purpose , because of the reflection of modernity and the deconstruction of the main body society .
