His love for Anna is the metonymic love, which is shown to Anna and the person around Anna, but lacks of passion in spite of being gentle and lasting. Despite of that, he doesnt take vengeance on her but choose to evade in religion. Karenin is not the maker of Anna＇s tragedy and he himself is a kind - hearted victim of the unsuccessful marriage.
