日耳曼法是与罗马法、教会法一起被视为近现代欧洲法律文明史上的三大基本渊源,也是构成中世纪西欧大陆的三大法律支柱之一,它为后世法律提供了不可替代的因素。长期以来,由于西方学者对罗马法的推崇,对被认为是"粗俗法"的日耳曼法的研究相对薄弱,而要真正全面了解和认识中世纪的历史,日耳曼法是一个极为重要的组成部分,其研究应该受到必要的重视,这对探讨当今两大法系的发展也有重要意义。

Together with Roman law and Canon law, Germanic law is regarded as the three basic sources in European civilization of Law, which also constitutes the three legal pillars of Western Europe in middle ages. Germanic law provides irreplaceable factors for law in later ages. For a long time, Germanic law is considered as vulgar law and is given to little attention for research, for the scholars have the greatest esteem for Roman law. if we want to know the history in medieval period all sided, Germanic law should be paid much attention as a very important part, which also helps to research the civil law system mad the common law system..
