As a Native American writer, Hogan is actively engaged in the Indian affairs for many years. Based on the events that have ever happened in American history, she created Solar Storms and Mean Spirit that revealed the true living situation of the Indians under the control of the white people. Sympathy would be aroused by the Indian people's poverty and bedraggled condition. This research will decode Hogan's Mean Spirit and Solar Storms from the perspective of ethical literary criticism which“is used not only to interpret the moral phenomena recorded in literature on a historical and dialectic basis, but also to make value judgment of those in the present literature based on the moral values in the reality.”( Nie Zhenzhao, “Ethical Literary Criticism: Its Fundaments and Terms” 9 ) It will decipher the ethical choices of the Indians and the white men, to analyze Hogan's discontentment and condemnation of the whites, and to interpret Hogan's dedication and love of Indian culture as well.
