By analyzing the evolution of the semantic references of the appellation chancellor m European and American govern-mental, judicial, diplomatic, educational and ecclesiastic spheres from the perspective of diachronic perspective, this paper insists that the retrieval of its etymological origin is conducive not only to better understanding of its meanings but also to conveying its richcultural implications in the process of translation. The corresponding translated appellations are based on the semantic meanings provided by unabridged dictionaries and encyclopedias coupled with contextual analysis. The accuracy of translated names is an effec-tive means to facilitate the cultural exchange between China and western countries.
