《古谣谚》的编者用经典研究的方法整理谣谚,在谣谚的概念界定、外延拓展、内容分类及著录次序等问题上都取得了明显的成绩;《古谣谚》也指出了谣谚在"诗言志"这个命题中的重要地位;《古谣谚》的编纂及其取得的成绩意味着来源于民间的谣谚进入严肃的学术研究领域,开中国现代学术重视谣谚研究之先河。

The compiler of Gu Yao Yan（ a collection of ancient ballads and adages） applies the methodology of classic study in his research and collation of ancient ballads and adages , and has made obvious achievements in terms of definition, classification and cataloguing. The collection shows the important position of ballads and adages in the proposition of ＂poetry expresses one＇ s will＂. The compiling of this book indicates that these oral folk arts have entered the serious realm of academic study, initiating a modem academic tradition which emphasizes the study of folk ballads and songs.
