Modernity denotes not merely transformation and progress in modern society but predicamentand crisis. Sherwood Anderson＇ s Winesburg, Ohio reveals epidemic effected by western industrial-mechanical civilization. This paper explores that the distortion and alienation afflicting the grotesque inWinesburg is attributed to inability to communication from the perspective of communicative rationalityadvanced by Habermas. Reading of the novel inspires that it is communicative reason that can solvemodernist crisis and transform the world into a more humane,just and egalitarian society.
