沈从文的文学创作,大都围绕"生命"二字展开,其艺术的全部归宿,就是探索和表现各种生命形式,用笔捕捉它们的光影。在小说《边城》中,作者由"自在"到"自为"的各种生命形态,得到了淋漓尽致的体现,并传达出沈从文最终以期重振民族精神和人生信仰的生命理想,但由于作者本身避开了时代发展中的政治选择,而是采用抒写理想人生的方式进行内心的救赎,从根本上脱离了历史情境与时代变迁的整体把握,造成了作品中人物的幽暗困境与自身的现实局限。

Shen Congwen＇s novels are mostly centered on the human life. His literature creation aims to ex- plore and express various forms of human life, just like hot and bright flame. In his novel The Border Town, he described an evolving life from muddle to autonomy, vividly reflecting the ideal life. And on this basis, he put his faith to revive the nation＇s ideals and the ideals of human life. He avoids getting the development of a politi- cal choice, but adopts and describes the ideal way of life. Breaking away from the overall grasp of the historical context and changing times, his figures had no way out. In a word, the novel just reflected the writer＇s realistic dilemma of life.
