Proceeding from the late flight tests of the sea-based and the ground-based midcourse defense elements of the United State＇s missile defense （MD） system ,the present framework of the MD system is briefly summarized ,and the compositions ,every aspect＇s functions and the working courses of the SMD and the GMD elements are discussed respectively ,and their present conditions and abilities are investigated .From this ,the development possibility for the United State＇s midcourse defense element is illustrated .
