This paper explores the reasons why Chinese learners of Japanese quit or continue their studies in Japanese language study groups. Research findings show that reasons are significantly associated with learners' conceptions of learning. Learners with a view of student-centered learning are able not only to effectively improve their language skills by taking language study groups, but also consistently participate in the classes. The learners with a view of teacher-centered learning, in contrast, are more inclined to depend on teachers in classes, and comparatively more likely to give up opporttmities for study in study groups. Based on these findings, it is suggested that the concept of student-centered learning should be established at universities, in order to satisfy the needs of lifelong learning in the contemporary society.
