A New Inquiry into the Meaning of Jiao Mansion and Da Jiao

在二十八宿星名含义中有一个疑问:角宿和大角何者为苍龙星象之角?通过探析星名含义及其演变后,认为"角"字在古文献中有头角和口角两种义指,古人原初以角宿表征苍龙星象的口角,以大角表征苍龙星象的头角,大约于秦汉时期角宿接替大角成为苍龙头角释义,反映星占文化与帝王政治的密切联系。

Which is the horn of east dragon in ancient Chinese astronomy, Jiao mansion or Da Jiao？ This is an unsettled question in the meaning of Chinese twenty-eight Mansions. According to theliteral mansion and evolution of traditional Chinese stars ,this paper holds that with respect to the lit- eral meaning of the word ＂Jiao＂ （ 角）, there are both the horn and the mouth in ancient Chinese lit- erature. Jiao mansion is the month of east dragon in the literal meaning, Da Jiao is the horn of east dragon in the literal meaning. The approximate date of Jiao mansion was the horn of east dragon dur-ing the Qin-Han period, Qin to Han period, so that there is a close contact between astrology and the monarch rule＇s political agenda.
