西藏古代使用印章的历史非常悠久,社会上各个阶层的人士在政治经济文化和宗教活动中和订立契约文书时都大量使用各种印章,现今存世的各种印章的数量也十分庞大。一些重要的印章还和西藏历史的一些重大事件密切相关,成为重要的历史见证。西藏印章上镌刻多种文字,印章的材质、镌刻的艺术、保管和使用等都具有鲜明的特色。西藏古代印章形成了一种印章文化,成为西藏传统文化的一个重要组成部分。

There was a long history in ancient Tibet on using Stamps were used popularly in political,economic,cuhural,and religious events,as well as,in establishing agreements by people who belonging to every social levels. Now numerous Stamps are well preserved. Some important Stamps are closely related to the big events in Tibetan history. They were historical witnesses. Kinds of characters were seal carved on them. The materials and arts of seal carving,preserving and using measures,etc. ,have distinct fea- tures. Ancient Tibetan Stamps has developed a special stamper culture. As an important part,it has con- sisted in Tibetan traditional culture.
