Crossing the River, which is a most known novel in all of the works of Cryl Phillips, not only lets him be chosen to win The James Tait Black Memorial Prize two times but also discusses the Diaspora problem deepest, almost covering the core contents of his Diaspora thoughts which are dislocation theme, hybridity nature and transcendence expectation respectively. Dislocation is the real description of his life and is also a common theme in his works. Since his first novel The Final Passage, Caryl Phillips has been continuously concerning about“dislocation” in Diaspora perspective, on the basis of“dislocation” theme, however, the essence of his Diaspora thoughts aims to advocate a kind of unique hybridized Diaspora outlook without considering the difference in races, nationalities and genders but to consider all races and nationalities in Diaspora, which is a kind of open, moveable and anti-essentialism Diaspora thought while what Phillips appeals is a kind of Diaspora outlook with transcending the difference in races, nationalities and genders.
