As two influencing heroines in British and American literature, Hester in The Scarlet Letter and Catherine in Wuthering Heights have totally different endings through ups and downs in life. From the perspective of Freud's Id, Ego and Superego, this paper is aimed at analyzing and comparing the two women's inner worlds in three different levels. Finally it is concluded that sublimation of Ego is an effective means to alleviate the tension between Id and Superego, and then rebirth comes from balance of conflicts while death relieves unbalance.
