Since the May 4th Movement in 1919,under the strong impact of Western civilization,the anti-traditional intellectual perspective became part of the mainstream ideology in China. Chinese traditional culture had to face its integrity crisis. However,in the 21st century,classic studies,especially Confucian studies,have got rid of the misfortune of being criticized repeatedly and go through a revival. Meanwhile,as classic studies and Confucian studies are gaining ground,narrow-minded nationalism is also in ferment. Commercialism is also a big problem. If we fail to put ourselves on guard,the revival of Confucianism will probably get the'kiss of death',as has been warned by Prof. Peng. In his new book,Rebuild Civility,Prof. Peng holds the issues facing modern Confucianism by the horns and suggests how we can avoid the'kiss of death'. His arguments are profound and thought-provoking.
