Geographic Information and Cultural Significance of Zhuchen Village

朱陈村是脍炙人口的千古名村,出于白居易《朱陈村》诗。朱陈村的具体地址,应以白居易所说"徐州古丰县,有村曰朱陈"为准,清乾隆《丰县志》记载在丰县赵庄。今人因丰县境内无山,与白居易诗中所说深山、远涧地形不合而加以怀疑,然丰县历史上并非无山,只是地处黄泛区之洪水走廊,黄沙淤积,地貌大变,因而不能简单以山之有无作为否定其在丰县的依据。朱陈村的实际地址一直扑朔迷离,但其文化形象却鲜活生动、极其美好,远远超越于实体存在,获得了乡土社会的符号意义,寄托着广大百姓的生活愿景,产生了广泛的影响。

Zhuchen Village is a well-known village with a history of over a thousand years, documented as early as Bai Juyi＇s poem Zhuchen Village in Tang Dynasty. The specific location of Zhuchen Village should be defined in accordance with Bai Juyi＇s description： ＂In the ancient county of Fengxian in Xuzhou, there is the village called Zhuchen. County Annal of Fengxian from the reign of Emperor Qianlong in Qing Dynasty carries the location of Zhao Village in the county. Now, since there is no mountainous terrain in Fengxian, which differs from Bai＇s poem that presents remote mountain and distant stream, so the exact location has been doubted by many. However, the history of Fengxian did record mountains, yet the accumulated result of flooding of Yellow River had changed the landscape. Therefore, whether the village is in Fengxian cannot be simply determined by the presence or absence of mountains. The actual location of Zhuchen Village has been evasive, yet its cultural image has been vivid and enchanting. It is far beyond the physical presence, gaining symbolic significance of the local community, embodying the the vision of the majority of local people, and exerting far-reaching impact.
