By observing the shape and distribution of Niumaowen in ancient jade and studying the space relationship between Niumaowen and carved ornamentation, we concluded that the so called Niumaowen is a series of tensional fractures on the jade surface fulfilled with iron oxide. Niumaowen is formed in the uncut jade. Whether ancient jade contains Niumaowen or not, it has no direct relationship with the age of the jade or whether the jade is buried in the ground. Thus the idea mentioned in the ancient book that Niumaowen is people’s spirit and blood is simply a conjecture. The Niumaowen also has nothing to do with the seepage of mercury.
