Chinese language education anal teacher preparation in Australia takes a leading position among the English speaking countries. This paper analyses the motivations and hindrances to Chinese language education in Australia. Within this context, a university training program for Chinese language teachers is evaluated. As a typical country of migrants, the muhilingual and muhieultural facts of Australia' s society and the muhicultural policy promoted by the government since the 1970s have greatly facilitated the teaching of Chinese and a broader range of languages other than English. Meanwhile, the features of student groups, teachers of Chinese, and the educational environment, determined by this muhicuhural society, have proposed a series of challenges to Chinese teaching, and the curriculum design and delivery of the professional Chinese teacher education programs. Analysis of the Australian experience is expected to provide some implications for the preparation of Chinese language teachers in overseas countries in a global context.
