孙葆田是清末重要学者、古文家。他跟随张裕钊学古文,推崇韩愈、曾巩、方苞,形成了独立的文学思想:因文见道,不立宗派;道德文章并重;于"有所法"中求"有所变";修辞立诚,不妄毁誉;推崇古淡自然的文风。其文章呈现出文风朴实弇雅,富有理致;为文注重章法,结构谨严;行文简而能要,曲而有直;语言雅正平实,不失简洁的艺术特色,值得学者关注。

Sun Baotian was an important scholar and a prose writer of the late Qing Dynasty. Zhang Yuzhao was his teacher of ancient Chinese prose. Under the influence of Zhang Yuzhao ,Han Yu, Zeng Gong and Fang Bao, Sun Baotian formed an independent literary thought such as to grasp the doctrines of confucius by way of literature, not to establish schools and so on. The articles of Sun Baotian present a writing style of elegance and rich thinking , the emphasis on order and strict structure, not only simplicity but aslo curved and straight, language elegantly without losing the art of simply. So he is worthy of attention.
