Investigating the syntactic and semantic knowledge development of English raising verbs by Chinese EFL learners

摘要 本研究旨在考察中国学习者英语提升动词语义句法知识的发展路径及其潜在的习得困难。145名在校学生和22位英语母语者参与并完成了本研究设计的语法性判断测试。对所得数据定量分析的结果显示,中国学习者英语提升动词语义句法知识的表征呈线性上升的发展趋势,且大部分句法语义知识与英语母语者水平接近,只有提升结构虚指主语it和there的知识未能达到英语母语者水平,因此它们是中国学习者习得英语提升动词的潜在难点。 This study aims to investigate Chinese EFL learnersdevelopmental route regarding the syntactic and semantic knowledge and their potential difficulties in acquiring English raising verbs.145Chinese students and 22English native speakers participated in the grammaticality judgment test designed for the present study.The data collected were analyzed quantitatively.The results revealed that Chinese learners followed a linear route in acquiring the syntactic and semantic knowledge of English raising verbs,and that most of them reached a native-like level except for the acquisition of expletives it and there in raising constructions.This indicates that expletives it and there might be the cause for potential difficulties for Chinese EFL learners in the acquisition of English raising verbs.
