Octacalcium phosphate (OCP) is supposed to be a precursor of hydroxyapatite in bone tissue. As an important bone replacement material, it possesses excellent biodegradability, better bone conduction and osteoinduction. Recent progress on the experimental attempts to fabricate pure OCP and OCP- based composite materials, such as combined within collagen, gelatin, alginate, chitosan and silk fibroin are reviewed, as well as their performance and applications in bone tissue engineering.
