摘要
汤显祖戏剧英译的副文本研究有助于清晰、精确、全面地揭示汤显祖戏剧翻译边缘领域所包含的翻译现象,从而使我们更客观全面地思考汤显祖戏剧文本的翻译行为和过程,及其如何对读者产生影响。本文将借鉴法国叙事学理论家杰拉德·热内特提出的副文本理论的研究方法,以汪榕培教授英译的汤显祖戏剧《牡丹亭》为例,审视副文本因素与翻译活动、译作面貌和质量之间的因果关系,以及副文本如何引导和影响译文读者感悟汤显祖戏剧作品的价值所在。
The paratextual study of the English translation of Tang Xianzu's dramas contributes to a clear, accurate and comprehensive understanding of the translation phenomena in the periphery of translation activities of Tang Xianzu's dramas. This is significant to a thorough and objective reflection of the behavior and process in translating Tang's dramas and this shows how the translation influences the readers. In this article, the paratextual theory put forward by Gerard Genette, the famous French literary theorist, is drawn on in an analysis of the English translation of The Peony Pavilion by Professor Wang Rongpei, which reveals the relation between the paratextual elements, translation activities, the outlooks and quality of the English translation as well as the role paratext plays in guiding the reader to appreciate the value of Tang's works.
