摘要
列国退还的庚款乃中国近代教育经费的主要来源之一。在各国退还庚款事件的始末,许多知名学人参与其间,对敦促庚款退还的最后实施发挥了重要作用。胡适就是一例。胡适与英庚款的关系大体可分为留美期间对庚款退赔的关注、20世纪20年代初就英庚款用途开展的讨论、20年代中期担任中英庚款咨询委员会委员和30年代初对管理中英庚款董事会管理事务的监督四个阶段。不管身份如何变化,胡适始终尽心竭力争取庚款资助教育。民国教育正是有他及其他知识分子的奔走,才在纷乱的时局中艰难前行。
The Boxer Indemnity is the main source of the fund to Chinese modern education. In the course of the Boxer Indemnity, many famous scholars participated in and played important roles. One of them is Hu Shih. His behavior about the British Boxer Indemnity can be divided into four stages. It includes Hu Shih's attention to the Boxer Indemnity when studying in American, his oppinions on the use of the British Boxer Indemnity in the early 1920s, as an member of the British-Chinese Indemnity Advisory Committee in the middle 1920s and his supervision to the Board of Trustees for the Administration of the British Indemnity Fund. Although his identity was in change, he tried his best to let the Boxer Indemnity aid education all the time. The development of education in the Republic of China partly owned to the intellctuals's efforts.
