纳米(nanometer)是长度单位,原称'毫微米',就是10^(-9)米(1米的10亿分之一)。纳米科学与技术,有时简称为纳米技术(nanotechnology),研究结构尺寸在1纳米至100纳米范围内材料的性质及其应用。小尺寸的世界人类在很早的时候就观察周围的世界,注意到在生活中所遇到的客体的大小。我们的老祖宗在形容小的时候常说'芥子之微'、'秋毫之末'。可见在古人眼里,'芥子'和'秋毫'是最小的东西了。在人工制备的小尺寸世界里。
Nanoscience and nanotechnology are disciplines of exploiting the novel properties and applications of nanostructural materials on the scale of nanometer. The fundamentals of this field, especially the nanoelectronics, are briefly described. It is clearly a very broad and interdisciplinary area with worldwide R& D activities and will most likely to give great impact on society and produce the breakthroughs of the coming 21st century.
