A PRELIMINARY INQUIRY ABOUT THE THEORY OF PARALLELS IN MEDIEVAL ISLAM

本文介绍九至十三世纪伊斯兰世界对平行线理论的贡献,并对几位著名学者为证明欧几里得平行公设所作的种种尝试进行了分析和比较,指出他们的工作推动了平行线理论的发展,且在非欧几何前史中占据重要位置。

This paper introduces the contribution of Islam to the theory of parallels in the 9th—13tb century with an analysis and comparison of a variety of atternpts made by several famous scholars to prove the Euclid's parallel postulate. It points out that the works of these scholars developed the theory of parallels substantially, thus occupying an important place in the prehistory of non-Euclidean geometry.
