Alteration of sarcolemmal membrane permeability of cardiac muscle cells in strep-tozotocin-induced diabetic rats was examined with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) as a tracer. Wistar rats were made diabetic by streptozotocin injection (i. p., 70mg/kg b. w.). Age-matched, untreated rats served as the controls. After 8 weeks of diabetes, HRP (10mg/100g b. w.) was injected intravenously and its localization in the ventricular myocardium was examined with light microscopy. The experimental results showed that the percentage of HRP-positive cardiac muscle cells in the heart of diabetic rats was significantly greater as compared with the age-matched controls, indicating that sarcolemmal membrane permeability of cardiac muscle cells in diabetic rats was markedly increased. The present study suggests that abnormal membrane permeability of cardiocytes may play an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetic cardiomyopathy.
