Tourism has become a significant field of research.Its emergence reflects the widespread recognition of the need for the management of tourism development to be based on a firm research foundation. In Australia,tourism has become a key focus for future economic development.However,tourism research is not well represented in the national research effort.This paper endeavors to provide an overview of current tourism research situation and impediments to the progress of tourism research in Australia and proposes actions to overcome these impediments and develop the substantial tourism resources that already exist within universities,government organizations and tourism enterprises.The paper addresses the significance of university-based tourism research.It also recognizes the importance of establishing collaborative linkages between the university and other sectors.
