Gas, or methane, has always being considered to be almost a unique substance for risk of explosion or spontaneous combustion during production, storage and transportation of coal. However, in recent years, a new concept for coal risk has been developed by Professor H. Cohen and his colleagues, whose observations for different kinds of coal have shown that molecular hydrogen, H2, can be released from coal at relatively low temperature (40~ 95℃ ) and oxidation or weathering. This paper gives a description of the evidences related with the molecular hydrogen emitted from coal on the basis of research results achieved by them and others in the world for lasting decade and evaluates their opinions that the molecular hydrogen accumulated in the limited space in coal storage probably results in the risk of explosion and spontaneous combustion. Some new evidences on molecular hydrogen emitted from underground mining coal that are obtained by the author are also briefly summarized, which primarily reveal that the risk of explosion and coal and gas outburst in the mining process probably has a close relation with the emission of molecular hydrogen from coal.
